The Cheviot - Northumberland
See Alan's comments on this walk below. The Cheviot, Northumberland – Sat 28th Aug Cruising through the winding roads of Northumberland, close to the Scottish border, and the start of Alan’s Pro-trek County Tops challenge comes into view. The Cheviot stands at 815 metres high and it can now be seen in the distance, despite the early morning mist. The best place to start this climb is from the large, grassy car park, at the bottom of Scald Hill, which is situated in front of The Cheviot, and Alan starts from here at 6:30am. Despite the chilling wind, the climb is straightforward and the troublesome boggy conditions that can often be associated with this top, don’t play a part for Alan. It used to be the case here that the peat bogs could go to 2 metres deep, but the Northumberland National Park authority have laid down stone slabs on the main access footpath to prevent erosion damage to the peat and to make access to the summit safer for walkers. Alan makes good time and is at the trig point at the top by 8am, and by 9.30am is back where it all began in the car-park. Powered by Lifestream.
